“What I am skeptical about is what human activity has to do with it.”
~ Governor Doug Ducey (2015)
In the face of climate disaster, our state legislators have done virtually nothing to reduce carbon emissions. And yet Arizonans are uniquely vulnerable to the effects of climate change – from increased dust storms along Interstate 10, to increased heat-related deaths. Here are some steps we can take immediately:
We Arizonans use more air conditioning than the rest of the country – four times more. This means more electricity, higher utility bills, and more fossil fuels. I support policies to keep us cool in the summer with less air conditioning. This includes:
In 2017, then-judge Brett Kavanagh ruled that the federal government could not regulate hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), a man-made chemical that is hundreds of times better than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. In response, states have begun to phase out HFCs. I support Arizona phasing out HFCs and other high global warming potential gases.
About 30% of greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector. We Arizonans drive more miles each year than the average American, and rely less on public transportation. I support increased statewide funding to our cities’ bus systems, to create more convenient and more frequent bus routes.
